چکیده

The hear ts of vertebrates are myogenic whereas those of most ar thropods are neurogenic. However, the hear t of Daphnia is an exception, as indicated by Bekker and Kri jgsman (1) whose studies led to the conclusion that Daphnia hear t is myogenic with apparen t inhibi t ion by extracardiac cholinergic nerves. Since Daphnia have hearts similar to ver tebra te hearts and are transpa ren t and easy to handle, this species is a useful one for the study of cardiac response to drugs. Viehoever and Cohen (2), and Sollman and W e b b (3) have utilized Daphnia for this purpose. Al though cardiac function studies have been conducted for Daphnia, the lack of knowledge of the histology or ul t rastructure of its hear t has precluded any correlat ion of structure and function for this tissue. Cardiac musculature is reported to be striated in Ar th ropoda (4) bu t has not been character ized for Daphnia. Ultras t ructura l studies on the hear t have not been carried out for any of the arthropods. Therefore, we set out to determine the ul t rastructure of Daphnia pulex hear t and specifically to determine whether it is striated.

The Effect of Amiodarone on the Ultrastructure of Ganglionic Neurons of Rabbit Heart

Purpose: This research has been carried out to study the morphological and ultrastructural changes of rabbit heart ganglionic neurons and nerve fibers after treatment with Amiodarone. Materials and Methods: 21 rabbits were divided into control and two experimental groups. The first experimental group for one week and the second experimental group for two weeks were injected intraperitoneally 8...

Additional Ultrastructural Observations of the Gill Epithelium of the Water Flea Daphnia Magna with Reference to Ionic and Macromolecular Transport

The ultrastructural features of the gill epithelium of adult Daphnia magna are consistent with their dual function of ion transport from the surrounding medium to the hemolymph and transport of macromolecules from the hemolymph towards the cuticle. The thin cuticle of the gill epithelium displays short, thin epicuticular tubercles and pits. Silver grains penetrate the cuticle in AgNO3 treated s...

An acoustic microscopy technique reveals hidden morphological defenses in Daphnia.

Inducible defenses are common strategies for coping with the selective force of predation in heterogeneous environments. In recent years the conspicuous and often dramatic morphological plasticity of several waterflea species of the genus Daphnia have been found to be inducible defenses activated by chemical cues released by predators. However, the exact defensive mechanisms remained mysterious...

Structural characterization of rat ventricular tissue exposed to the smoke of two types of waterpipe

Objective(s):this study focused on the effect of waterpipe smoke exposure toxicity on the structure of albino rat’s ventricular tissue and their recovery. Materials and Methods: Albino rats were divided into three groups: control, flavored, and unflavored. The control group was exposed to normal air while the flavored and unflavored groups were exposed to waterpipe smoke for a period of 90 days...

Uncovering Ultrastructural Defences in Daphnia magna – An Interdisciplinary Approach to Assess the Predator-Induced Fortification of the Carapace

The development of structural defences, such as the fortification of shells or exoskeletons, is a widespread strategy to reduce predator attack efficiency. In unpredictable environments these defences may be more pronounced in the presence of a predator. The cladoceran Daphnia magna (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Cladocera) has been shown to develop a bulky morphotype as an effective inducible morph...
